Maine is a large state, and my students in Maine think so. It’s a big state in comparison to New England. Maine is small compared to the West. Similarly, students have difficulty understanding how the lower 48 state compare to Canada. Students can use the following tool to compare their state and country sizes with other countries.
The True Size of… is a web tool which allows you to compare quickly the sizes of two countries, or two states in the United States. Enter one country into the search bar, then another. You will see both countries highlighted. Drag and drop each country onto the other. As shown in the screenshot below, you can do the same with US states.
