Singapore refunds SGD $7.5M GST that was wrongfully charged


Singapore’s government announced on February 14th that GST (goods-and-services tax) of at least SGD $7,500 was incorrectly charged for fees related to 18 government services. Affected taxpayers will receive a refund.

Today, Pacific Prime CXA will go over the Singapore government’s tax refund on the affected taxpayers following the wrongful collection of GST.

Wrongful GST Collection Overview

Six agencies erroneously deemed that the 18 fees for government services were processing fees.

There are several agencies that can be contacted, including the Council for Estate Agencies (CFA), the Housing Board, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the Singapore Food Agency and the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

Due to the misclassification, GST was demanded as people and business paid for these 18 government services ranging from real estate agent license renewals and renting a HDB (Housing & Development Board) flat or bedroom to applying to operate a food processing company.

Taxes Wrongfully Charged: The Amount

The GST charged for the lowest amount was SGD $0.70, which is for the amendment of a Class 2 bus service licence and SGD $1.50 for administrative costs for renting a HDB apartment or bedroom.
