Digital Badging, also known as digital credentials, has existed since the beginning of 2000. Mozilla was the first to use it to reward and recognize users for their contributions to open-source communities. Since then badgings have been a popular tool to recognize achievements and skills in a variety of fields.

Digital badges in higher education have become an effective tool to recognize and validate various skills and accomplishments of students outside the traditional academic degrees.
