Yancy Sanes teaches a unit on the climate crisis at Fannie Lou Hamer High School in the Bronx – not climate change, but the climate crisis. He has made it clear that he wants to see his students become climate activists.

“I teach from a mindset and lens that I want to make sure my students are becoming activists, and it’s not enough just talking about it,” the science and math teacher said.I need to take my students outside and have them actually do the work of protesting.”

The school works with local environmental justice groups to promote a greener Bronx. Sanes brought some of his students to an event that called for the closing of Rikers island jail, and its replacement by a solar energy plant, wastewater treatment plants and battery storage facilities.

Sanes receives a lot support from his administration for this approach. Fannie Lou Hamer High School is also a member of the A Special Assessment ConsortiumGiving it a try…
