As a football lover who grew in the San Francisco Bay Area let me tell that Niner Nation as a culture institution is hard to avoid. As my relatives watched every game, I was raised with Jerry Rice and Steve Young. My mother, who does not like football, also loved Joe Montana. It’s hard to love the Bay Area and not have at least a little admiration for The Niners.
It’s not without reason. The 49ers have one of the best-decorated teams in the National Football League. Their illustrious career includes 20 divisional championships and seven conference championships. They also have five Super Bowl titles. Many NFL records are held by the team, including the most consecutive wins on the road (18).
A franchise with a history like this will have had many outstanding players, but who is the best among them? It’s hard to limit the top 10 49ers down to 10.
