I’ve always loved old things. I used to be fascinated by antique shops and junk yards when I was younger. I was fascinated by the craftsmanship and stories behind the objects. I knew then that I would like to buy a historic property in Connecticut. There’s so much rich history here, given that it’s one of the original colonies and the British marched through our area during the Revolutionary War. And pre–Revolutionary War homes are an endangered species—there’s so much new construction going up that’s ironically made to look like farmhouses. I’ve always felt called to conserve and protect an old jewel of a home.

We were living in a mid-century house, so when an historic one from the 1700s was put on the market near our current home, I forced my husband to come and look. When we first walked into the house, both my husband and I were awed. We had three kids, so we weren’t looking to buy a new home.
