Queens Public Library will host a virtual table with retired teachers. astronaut Dr. Ellen Baker tonight at 6:30 p.m. as part of their Women’s History Month programming.
Baker is the daughter Claire Shulman, former Queens Borough Mayor and the 11th female astronaut in history. She grew up Bayside. Baker attended the University of Texas Health Science Center to study internal medicine after graduating medical school. She joined NASA in 1981 as a medical officer at the Johnson Space Center. In 1984, she was an astronaut who completed three space missions and logged over 680 hours of space time throughout her career.
She has conducted experiments in crystals, biology and combustion as well as explored Jupiter using a deployed spacecraft. Baker retired from her career in 2011.
Throughout March, the Queens Public Library has been celebrating female professionals and advocates hailing from Queens as a part of their “Changemakers: Women Who Advocate” programming.
The Queens Library branches will continue to host programming through the end of this month. This includes movies, arts and craft, live readings, and table discussions.
