By Allison Leedie, M.Ed,  partnerships manager at Khan Academy Kids and former teacher and literacy coach

There is not much time to plan, the copier jams, and a class observation is coming up. Sounds familiar? You?

As a former educator and literacy coach, what I find most useful are lessons and activities that you can implement. Now is the time to act Little preparation but lots of engagement.

No need to search any further! You can find four simple activities to support science-based reading practices, regardless of the stage at which your learners are in.

Pre-Literacy

Reading and writing are still a long way off for our youngest students. Pre-literacy describes the period between a child’s first attempts to read or write. Pre-literacy includes:

  • Narrative skills
  • Vocabulary development
  • Print Awareness
  • Print Motivation
  • Let’s know each other by letter
