Recap of 2008
The year 2008 was a mixed bag for WWE. In 2008, the company had to start the year by cleaning up the mess from the previous year. This was the year of the company’s divisive transition to PG. It was also the year of Vince’s Million Dollar Giveaway. Despite the subtext of Vince basically bribing people to watch TV, it led to lots of awkward TV – including a planned set collapse that never paid off.
But there were things to like in the year – 2008 was marked by a brilliant blood feud between Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho. Jericho was the king of 2008, thanks to his Anton Chigurh character. Smackdown was more eclectic. It’s true that 2008 could have been boring when it was bad. Normally I like wacky bad but in 2008, the bad stuff was largely innocuous.
There were a lot of weird trends in 2008 that I want to address now so I don’t sound like a broken record. In 2008, B-titles and tag titles were given less attention. Vince and his booking team decided to add segments in 2008.
