It doesn’t take being a shop owner to build the ultimate diesel, but it certainly doesn’t hurt! Randall Williams’ team and the Diesel Shop in Locust Grove have a lot of diesel knowledge and experience. It should be no surprise, then, that the stunning cover truck this month is a 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty. This custom-built truck was built using a combination of skills.

Everyone loves a Dually with a Lowered Frame

Randall and his crew at The Diesel Shop have built a number of impressive trucks over the years, but if you’re looking for a unique showstopper like no other, look no further than one of Randall’s personal rigs—his lowered 2017 F-350 Super Duty dually.

In the past, dual rear wheel trucks were considered to be workhorses capable of towing or hauling thousands pounds of weight with minimal effort. But outside of this magazine, how many dually-turned-show-trucks do you normally see? Not that Randall has taken this truck to any shows, but certainly wouldn’t look out of place if he did.

While Randall’s dually maintains its superior towing and hauling abilities, it’s the truck’s unique details that elevate it to a different class—or lower it—as the next thing you’ll notice about the truck second only to the red paint is its lower than average stance.

The F-350, with its full air-suspension setup, shows just how great a lowered dualally can look. Giving the truck its lowered stance is a Hutch’s Welding front air-bag suspension kit paired with a custom cantilever rear air-bag suspension kit built specifically for the project by The Diesel Shop. The air suspension is powered by two Viair compressors as well as a seven-gallon water tank.

“Everyone loves a lowered dually, even the haters,” Randall told us when asked what he learned while building his truck. We must say that we agree with Randall!

Adding to the truck’s unique look are stout 24-inch Alcoa wheels, which Randall wrapped in 285/40R24 Giovanna rubber – tires known for their all-weather performance as well as reduced road noise. Expertly tucked up into the truck’s fender wells, Randall tells us there is no rubbing from the tires to speak of, from one end of the truck’s steering to the other. Combining a bagged-suspension with large wheels and tires that were tucked underneath the truck, Randall achieved an aggressive bulldog like stance.

Power Stroke

Randall was concerned that the truck’s diesel form would not be compromised, despite the fact that it has undergone a number of modifications. Under the hood of the dually, the 2017 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel V-8 is still present, but it has been upgraded with several components to increase its performance and power.

Randall, his team and The Diesel Shop fitted the engine first with a KC Turbos Turbocharger Whistler, which provided over 100 horsepower. The turbocharger was installed with a simple drop-in. The team also installed a five-position chipset for increased horsepower and torque on demand.

Letting the truck breathe even better is a No Limit Fabrication cold-air intake, while H&S Motorsports upper and lower fuel filter kits give added protection to the truck’s fuel system. Fuel is delivered to the truck through a large 50-gallon gas tank. Expelling the spent fuel from the engine is a custom 4-inch exhaust dumping just in front of the truck’s rear wheels.

Backing the Power Stroke, you’ll find the truck’s reliable factory 6R140 6-speed automatic transmission, spinning a heavy-duty driveshaft.

The Full Package

Randall’s F-350 Super Duty remains pretty true to form in regards to the truck’s body and interior, but they too got upgrades to enhance the build.

The truck’s exterior features a Fomoco Grille, RYD Motors bumper valance and an aftermarket hood. These all add character to the build. Donny Manner painted the Race Red body paint, which is absolutely stunning. Undoubtedly, this color was chosen for its ability to draw attention. But, we think it is the black accents on the body and the contrasted badging in a contrasting color that makes the truck really stand out. This is not your typical factory Race Red with black paint scheme.

The truck’s interior retains the factory black leather, but has been upgraded with a Ford Raptor steering wheel and paddle shifters. Inside, the stereo system received the most significant upgrade. It features a Phoenix Stereo System with a digital screen 13-inch Tesla Style. The system features an MTI Acoustics box, a JL Subwoofer 13 inches and a JL amplifier.

To say that Randall’s lowered 2017 Ford F350 Super Duty is a show-stopper, is putting it lightly. Randall says that he credits the build’s success to his spending on good parts. We’d argue that his knowing where to go big and where to ere on the side of more simplistic rather than overdone should also be credited for the finished build, not to mention Randall and his team’s building skills!

He hasn’t taken it on any shows yet, but with his gorgeous build we feel there will be some in the near future. It may even show up lower at a future show. Just like with any build, there’s something Randall would do differently on his – a lower rear end and ride control, he told us. Regardless, it’s a truck to keep an eye on!

Here’s to hoping we see it in the Winner’s Circle at some of our favorite mid-America truck shows in the near future!
