A new form of intelligence entered our classrooms at the end of the 2022 fall semester. Faculty members were busy grading exams, winding down their semesters, and anticipating the holidays. OpenAI released ChatGPT without much fanfare or ceremony on 30 November 2022.

We will no longer be able to learn the way we used to, nor perform our daily tasks.

AI pioneers and digital natives

After a COVID-19-induced hangover of three years, our postpandemic culture was only now accepting the reality that the world as it had been known to us is no more. We will always remember 2023 as the year that we were thrust into an era of ever-developing artificial intelligence. The history books will remember the 2020s not only as a decade that brought a global pandemic but also for some of its fastest artificial intelligence developments.

Generative AI, despite the temptation to believe that it is a threat, is changing our way of consuming information.

We must also understand the context of higher education.
