Grand Jury Indicts Alec Baldwin for Rust Movie Shooting – Again

Baldwin was shooting a Western in New Mexico, 2021. Baldwin pointed a firearm at Halyna Hustchins, the cinematographer who was on set, during filming. The gun fired, killing Hutchins while injuring the director Joel Souza.

The case was reopened by prosecutors with a fresh analysis of the gun used, after an initial dismissal of a manslaughter involuntary charge. The analysis found that the revolver Baldwin was holding would only have fired had the trigger been pulled, or pressed, to release the hammer. Baldwin had claimed he was holding the gun’s hammer, but not the trigger when the gun went off.

The new indictment alleges that Baldwin caused Hutchins’ death by either negligence or total disregard or indifference for safety. The new charges can result in a prison sentence of up 18 months. “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was also charged with involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering in a separate case in front of a different judge. Rust movie productions paid a $100,000 fine since to the state’s safety regulators.
