The former president Donald Trump, who won the South Carolina Republican primaries in a seemingly unstoppable march towards the Republican nomination for President Joe Biden’s challenge in November this year, has now won the Republican primary. The New York Times Reports came in less than 30 min after the polls closed, confirming that Trump defeated former Gov. Nikki Haley was his last remaining opponent in her home state.
Haley’s defeat was not surprising: Prior to the primary, polling aggregater FiveThirtyEight Trump’s average polling score was 64 percent, while Haley’s was 33 percent. Haley polled at her highest level in her home state, South Carolina, since April 20,23.
Haley will still be hurt by the loss, as she reiterated in this week her intention to remain in the race until “the last person votes.” She has spent over $1 million on advertising in states where the “Super Tuesday” vote will be held on March 5. With the loss of her home state signaling an increasingly uncertain path for her to win the Republican nomination, there’s no way she can prevent the Trump-Biden matchup that voters don’t want.
