More than any other group, sailors possess an acute awareness of nature’s nuances, from wind and waves to storms and calms.

No matter what your stance on climate change is, there are two unavoidable facts that have been revealed in the last few years: our oceans are heating up, and severe weather conditions are happening more frequently and with greater intensity. As has many a cruiser, I’ve had the displeasure of witnessing both of these happenings firsthand.   

On a boating trip we took with friends last summer in the Florida Keys not far from Key Largo. We floated over branches after branches of lifeless white corral that looked like something from an icy snow globe, rather than a tropical oasis. Silvery corals are more common than not these days. They are a sign of a larger problem: coral reefs in the tropics are bleaching and dying at an alarming rate.
