Want to See Congaree’s Synchronized Fireflies This Year? Here’s What You Need to Know.

Congaree National Park announced today that thousands of people will attend its iconic annual Synchronized-Firefly event from May 16 through the 25th.

“This special natural light show continues to grow in popularity, drawing people from across the nation to the park to witness firefly synchronization, demonstrating why places like Congaree are vital for preserving such unique natural phenomenon for future generations to experience and enjoy,” said Congaree National Park’s Superintendent, Greg Hauburger.

One of Congarees’s signature happenings, the Synchronized Firefly Event gives viewers the best shot at witnessing one of the area’s most impressive natural phenomena,  thousands of fireflies blinking their lights at the same time. This spectacular event occurs every spring for approximately two weeks. Researchers believe the synchronicity is to help in mating, as male fireflies put on a bioluminescence display to attract a partner.

There are 2,000 firefly species estimated to exist around the world, but there are only three species in North America. Photinus carolinus Congaree National Park attracts visitors from all over the world to view this species.
