Turkish study finds high Salmonella levels in poultry meat



According to a recent study conducted in Turkey, nearly 40 percent (40%) of all chicken products were contaminated with Salmonella.

Researchers studied the prevalence, antibiotic resistance and genomic diversity in raw poultry products throughout Turkey.

Total of 293 samples, including chicken patty, chicken wing, chicken offal and skinned drumstick were collected.

Samples were obtained from different retail shops in Kayseri throughout 2019. The samples were collected in two-week intervals throughout the year, and they were obtained from different brands as well as production facilities during the same period.

Recent results published in the International Journal of Food Science and Technology revealed that 112 samples contained Salmonella. Of the five and one isolates, they were both identified as Salmonella Enteritidis and Typhimurium. Scientists have said that these findings show the importance for continued control and monitoring measures in the poultry sector.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, the most frequent Salmonella serotype in Turkey between 2012 and 2016 was Salmonella Enteritidis.
