The violent crime rate in North Carolina dropped again in 2022


The national crime rate continues to attract a lot of media attention, but I haven’t seen much on North Carolina-specific crime data. I wrote a post about the violent crimes in our state at the end 2022. In my post, I mentioned that violent crime levels fell between 2021 and 2020. Rates for both years are lower than the 1990s peaks.

In this article, I discuss the county-level variations of violent crime rates. I also investigate the popular perception that violent crime is higher in urban counties than rural counties.

North Carolina’s violent crime rate will decline by 2022

This post also discusses index violent crime data. Since many years, the Federal Bureau of Investigation uses index offenses in order to standardize data collection by states. Index violent crime is made up of four crimes: murder, forced rapes, robbery, or aggravated attacks. The data are taken from police records and then published by State Bureau of Investigation.

In 2022 the state’s index violent crime rate fell from the previous year, as was also the case in 2021. Figure 1 shows North Carolina’s index violent crime rate per 100,000 residents over the past 40 years.
