Orlando Family Magazine Every year, the community recognizes local women who have actively contributed to positive changes. These women are committed to improving the world through their time, money, and expertise. Whether by establishing nonprofits or supporting charitable initiatives, this year’s cohort of 15 remarkable women is bound to motivate and uplift us all.

WOMAN OF YEAR
Lashea Reaves is the Founder and Executive director of 8 Cents in Jar
Reaves, then 14, was 14 years old at the time her mother died as a result of hospital negligence. This left her father with four daughters and no other parent. A malpractice lawsuit resulted in a large settlement for the family. In less than 24 months, the money was gone and they were living in poverty. In 2002, Reaves enrolled at Florida A&M University. After her freshman year she was a single mom and homeless. She slept on couches of friends. While struggling to raise her daughter, she adopted her younger sister, due to her father’s admittance…
