The Rwandan government says that it is ready to accept migrants from the United Kingdom. This comes after the British Parliament approved this week a controversial and long-stalled bill to stop the flow of people who cross the English Channel by small boats.

There is even a place ready and waiting for the migrants — a refurbished Hope Hostel in the vibrant upscale neighborhood of Kagugu, an area of the Rwandan capital of Kigali that is home to many expats and several international schools.

The hostel once housed college students whose parents died in the 1994 genocide, this African nation’s most horrific period in history when an estimated 800,000 Tutsi were killed by extremist Hutu in massacres that lasted over 100 days.

The British Prime Minister Rishi sunak has promised that deportation flights will begin in July, but has refused details or to say how many people will be deported.

Alain Mukuralinda, the deputy spokesperson for Rwanda’s government, told The Associated Press that authorities in Rwanda have been preparing for the arrival of migrants for over two years.
