In the future, it may not be New York City, Chicago, or Los Angeles that will have the tallest building in America. It could instead jolt up through the sparse Oklahoma City skies. If realized, the hulking building proposal referred to as the “Legends Tower” would be more than double the height of the city’s next tallest building.

Oklahoma City’s planning commission approved a height increase request submitted by the tower’s developer last week, nudging the once seemingly unlikely idea close to reality. The designers want to build the tower 1,907 feet tall, which coincides with Oklahoma’s statehood date. That audacious height would make the Legends Tower more than 200 feet taller than New York’s 1,776-foot One World Trade Center. In the entire world, only five buildings are higher. Prior to the height change, developers suggested a 1750-foot tower. Clearly, that wasn’t tall enough.
