North Carolina Public Defender Expansion 2024

The North Carolina General Assembly approved funding in 2023 to create eight public defender districts. Eight new districts will be created, covering 22 counties. Once they are in place, sixty of North Carolina’s 100 counties will be served by a public defender. Seven new districts will be fully funded by January 1, 2020; the eighth district, July 1, 2020. New public defender offices require time to hire and train their staff before they can begin accepting cases.

Below is a map that shows counties with a Public Defender Office before 2024. It also shows counties which will have one in 2024. And counties without a Public Defender Office.
