Hagen Smith slays 17 Oregon State players in masterful outing

The Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field is home to Arkansas lefthander Hagen Smith. Faced with No. In six innings, he struck 17 batters out against No.

Smith tied the Arkansas program record of strikeouts for a single match. Jess Todd struck 17 batters out in a game against South Carolina played in 2007. Smith’s 17 strikeouts also set a single-game record for Globe Life Field, which opened in 2020.

Mason Guerra, first baseman of the Beavers, hit a two-run double home run to tie the score in the eighth inning. Smith had left the game in a 4-0 advantage. Peyton Holt, the second baseman, scored an RBI triple to give Arkansas the lead in the bottom inning. While Oregon State got the tying run to third base in the ninth, the Beavers couldn’t bring him in and the No. The No. 3 Razorbacks (4-1), who were able to hold on, won 5-4.

Smith kept the Beavers (5-1), with only three hits and one walk, to a maximum of five outs. He was also very efficient in striking out many batters, and threw 78 pitch over six innings.

Smith’s start came on the heels of a tough Opening Day for the Preseason All-American. He was removed from the game against James Madison last Friday after 42 pitches were thrown in the first inning. He struck out twice but allowed three runs on two hits, two walks, and one hit. Smith has now recorded a 0-0 record, a 3.85 ERA and 19 strikeouts over seven innings of this season.

Smith showed no signs of a lack of command on Friday at Arlington. He mixed in his ferocious slide liberally, and threw it aggressively to both lefthanded and rhodhanded hitters. Smith also got the better of Preseason All-American Travis Bazzana, the Beavers’ leadoff hitter and a candidate to be a top-five draft pick in July. He struck Bazzana out in all three showdowns.

Smith’s 17 strikeouts are the most in a game so far this season and also match the most in a game last year. Charlotte’s Wyatt Hudepohl struck out 17 last March against Old Dominion and LSU’s Ty Floyd struck out 17 against Florida in the first game of the College World Series finals.
