America is covered in AR-15 rifles. We use Gene Stoner’s classic smoke pole for home defense, recreation, law enforcement, and hunting. The basic design dates back to more than 60 years.

Six decades are a very long time. In 1960, a phone was the size of a shoe and remained attached to the wall. Decent computers took up entire buildings. We can surely do better now that we are so far into the Information Age.

Build FN SCAR 15, SBR

The FN SCAR represents the state-of-the-art. SCAR stands as Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle. This is probably the coolest name for a gun in military history. The SCAR was developed in 2004 in response to a request from the US Special Operations Command.

The SCAR revolves around the principle of modularity. The SCAR comes in two main versions: SCAR-L, (Light), and SCARH (Heavy). Common receivers can also be configured to become a micro Personal Defense Weapon (PDW), a carbine, an assault rifle or a designated marksman weapon. In 2009, the SCAR-L was used in combat by U.S. Army Rangers. The SCAR-H still remains in USSOCOM weapons rooms.

The SCAR 17S, also known as the SCAR H in 7.62x51mm, is a semi-auto version. The SCAR 20S has a heavy barrel and is a precision version. The SCAR 16S, on the other hand, is a civilianized version of the standard 5.56x45mm GI Combat rifle. Meanwhile, the SCAR 15P, a stubby variant of this gun with a 7.5 inch barrel, is a shortened and abbreviated version of that same gun. Hold that thought.

Inflation Nation

Everything is getting more expensive. Gas was $1.78/gallon in my area during the final months of Trump’s presidency. It is now nearly double that. Our money just doesn’t go terribly far these days.

Imagine what you could buy for $200. Back in my childhood, a pair c-notes seemed like a lot of money. Today, if your kids bring their friends along with you, $200 will buy dinner for the entire family and a movie. That’s objectively bad, but there is a silver lining.

National Firearms Act of 1932 is America’s most draconian gun law. It regulates machineguns, sound suppressors and short barreled weapons. In 1934, the $200 transfer tax was equal to $4,600 in today’s dollars. This astronomical tax effectively stopped all commerce in guns the government didn’t want us to have. The National Firearms Act was finally overthrown by inflation.

Today $200 is hardly front pocket change, but it’s not the massive buzz wrecker that it once was. So long as you live in a free state, the typical American with a clean record can sign up on the BATF’s e-Forms website and file a Form 1 to create a short-barreled rifle at home. The site is kind of antiquated and the fingerprint requirements are tedious, but it’s doable for normal folks. If you are familiar with your contract for your cell phone, you should have no problem navigating this site.

Processing times used to be so long. It took me fourteen months to process an NFA application. A friend told me that his Form 1 application was approved electronically in just a week. I have actually met a few of the good folks who work at the BATF’s NFA Branch in Martinsburg, Virginia. This is an incredible performance, considering the number of transfers that we do through them.

A small folding stock added to the FN SCAR 15P makes it handy.

Source Material for FN SCAR 15, SBR

The mission was to build the world’s coolest SBR (Short-Barreled Rifle). The FN SCAR 15P was used as a base. This big-boned, gas-piston-driven handgun features an aluminum-receiver and polymer-fire control system as well as ambidextrous buttons and unparalleled reliability. Two charging handles are included, one is straight and the second is angled. One was mounted on each side.

The SCAR 15P can be ordered in either FDE or black and offers plenty of rail space. The Picatinny rail is long enough for any tactical glass and can be adjusted without the use of tools. The SCAR 15P, while not cheap, is probably the most reliable combat weapon for 5.56x45mm in the world.

The SCAR 15P ships from the factory without a stock. Many companies make aftermarket folding stocks to fit the SCAR weapons. The range of options is huge, from insane to expensive.

Original SCAR stock is a direct replacement but can be expensive and hard to find. Some of the more exotic stocks will cost you a thousand dollars, which is insane. The buttcap includes a small length of Pic Rail that can be used with an adaptor. So configured, the SCAR 15P is compatible with any M4 standard stock or SIG-style sidefolder.

Exercise your Stock Options

After the paperwork was approved, mounting one of many buttstocks was an easy task. We wanted to get it right so I set up the gun with a Trijicon Accu-Color and a nice Streamlight Tactical Light. The result is compact, versatile and fun. More than Joe Biden thinks you should have.

The barrel is 7.5 inches long and has a stubby shape. It corners like a Bugatti. The adjustable buttstock is more versatile than a multi-tool and can be adjusted in different directions. The FN SCAR 15 SBR is right at home securely tucked behind the door in the closet for those times when the dog just won’t shut up at two o’clock in the morning.

Nothing about this project cost a penny. You get what you paid for is more than a simple adage. The SCAR 15 SBR with its sexy, cool, and reliable upgrades is reliable, accurate, and effective. You will make new friends on the shooting range.
