Collector’s Corner: Cast Iron Journey with Lee Campbell

Lee Campbell is an Alabama-based collector of cast iron cookware, including rare pieces. Here, he shares the journey he took to collect an impressive and historical cast iron collection.

What inspired you to collect cast iron?

Around 15 years back, I was really frustrated with nonstick pans. I’d tried cast iron cooking in the past, but wasn’t very successful. So I asked my friend to share some tips. Soon after, I became obsessed with cast iron. As I improved, my obsession with cast iron grew. [at cooking] It allowed me to finally use the Lodge No. When my wife and me got married, I received a Lodge No. But it was learning about the Birmingham Stove & Range (BSR) Company that inspired me to collect more and more, I’d say.

What are the pieces you use every day?

BSR Red Mountain Series No.8 skillet I use frequently I use my BSR Red Mountain Series No. 8 skillet often. It’s either that or my No. 5. Whether I’m making a quick grilled cheese or [browning] meat for spaghetti, I’m always reaching for those. They’re versatile and perfect for anything I need done, even cakes and casseroles.
