Anthony Barnes was a former executive of the soft drinks and chemical industries before he became director of the Redundant Churches Fund. This is now called the Churches Conservation Trust. Later, he became the secretary of the Norfolk Churches Trust and helped to conserve a variety of ecclesiastical building across the county.
Anthony, as both a Trust member and later a volunteer with Norwich’s St Peter Hungate, saved several Norfolk churches from being turned into wine bars. He wrote dozens church guides. He was an Anglican devout, but his work was motivated by the conviction that church building were just as important to non-Christians than those who attend every Sunday.
