What mothers need to know about the new postpartum depression drug Zurzuvae

Postpartum Depression (PPD) can be a serious mental disorder that develops in approximately One in seven new moms. But the recently approved drug, Zurzuvae, offers a chance at recovery—along with concerns—for many patients suffering with the condition. Here’s what women need to know about this new postpartum depression drug. 

What is Zurzuvae

The FDA approved the use of Zurzuvae (also known as zuranolone) to treat zuranolone-related disorders on Friday. PPD. It’s an oral medication, and until now, treatment for PPD was only available as an IV injection given by a health care provider in certain health care facilities, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sage Therapeutics, Biogen and other companies branded the drug. 

Here’s how the medication works: Women take a 50mg pill daily. According to the FDA, the medication should be taken in the evening, every day for 14 days with a meal high in fat. 

How soon do women notice a difference after beginning the medication regimen? Fast—according to Sage Therapeutics.
