You want your children to be healthier and happier? You can start by talking to them about unpleasant emotions.

While we may wish our kids could be happy all the time, as it turns out, they wouldn’t be healthy if they were. The studies show that those with emodiversity (a variety of negative and positive feelings) are happier and healthier. In environments that encourage the expression of only positive feelings, those with negative feelings are more likely to be affected. Susan David, PhD is a psychologist and best-selling author of Emotional Agility says in her TED Talk, “Tough emotions are part of our contract with life. You don’t get to have a meaningful career or raise a family or leave the world a better place without stress and discomfort.”
