Virginia Democrats last week took control of the state House and retained control of the state Senate by one seat — but a winning senator may have lied about residing in the district, a situation that could lead to the chamber falling into Republican hands.
Democrats will control the state Senate with a margin of 21-19. However, if Ghazala Hahmi is found to be ineligible for office due to lying on her campaign paperwork then she could be replaced by a Republican and Republican Lieutenant Governor. Winsome Sears will break ties.
Hashmi claimed to have lived in an apartment at Boulder Lake Drive on North Chesterfield’s Senate District 15 in North Chesterfield.
Four neighbors complained that she lived outside of the district in Midlothian on Bosham Lane. They provided a spreadsheet stating they drove by the house 62 different times during October to prove her residency. Notes include the fact that her car was there at midnight and in the early morning and she left the house just after 8 am. This includes photographic evidence.
