We reported earlier this year on the Mepro M21, a self-illuminated reflexion optic (below). This optic uses tritium and fiber optics to provide dual illumination, without the use of batteries. The company is now partnering with OpticsPlanet in order to add the OPMOD HC reticle.

Clayton Jenkins, Senior Director of Supply Chain Development for OpticsPlanet designed the new reticle to enable faster target acquisition. The 3MOA dot rests in a high-speed bracketed pattern, which allows users to frame targets faster. Just below the dot, a chevron is used to facilitate longer-range shots.

OpticsPlanet’s OPMOD gear is designed to be a “no-BS” brand. According to the company, OPMOD is a brand created by people who know how to do the job. Many OPMOD products come with a limited warranty.

“We are excited to bring this new red dot variation to our customers. This exclusive 3.0MOA dot will allow the shooter to acquire targets faster and with greater accuracy. We’ve worked with Meprolight® for several years and this new collaboration continues to show our belief in their products and brand. We are excited to see the market response,” said Jenkins.

Personal Defense World published a report on March 6, 2023.

Red dot optics are great for acquiring targets quickly, but require regular maintenance. A schedule is important for battery changes. However, there’s still the possibility you may forget, or even get a bad battery that dies faster than it should. For this reason, an optic that doesn’t require batteries, like the Meprolight Mepro M21, allows you to set it and forget it.

M21’s durable aluminum body can handle harsh environments. Your optic is also designed to withstand submersion in water and drops tests to MIL-SPEC requirements. The M21 was actually developed for Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and is still in active service today. It has therefore been tested in combat and shown to be durable under adverse conditions.

Dual-illuminated 1X reflex sights provide instant, all-light aim without batteries. The M21 uses fiber-optic lighting to pull ambient light during the day for a brighter reticle. Tritium is used at night for a brighter reticle, even in low or no light situations. According to the company’s claims, the switch between the two systems occurs instantly and automatically.

The M21 comes with a large window of 30mm for a greater field of view, which allows you to fire while both eyes are open. The window houses five amber-colored options for reticle. You can choose between Bullseye (4.3 MOA), X (5.5 MOA circle and dot), Triangle, 5.3 MOA circle and dot or 4.3 MOA. According to the company’s statistics, the 5.5 MOA dot/circle and Triangle are most popular.

The Mepro M21 works with Night Vision Goggles, or Scopes. This includes those with Gen III Tubes. A magnifier placed close to the optic does not reduce the field of vision. There are no buttons or switches to turn on or off, nor is there any maintenance required.

Editor’s Note:

It is not free. The optic will lose its illumination over time, since it uses tritium to illuminate at night. According to the company however, tritium lighting is guaranteed for 10 years.

You might not even care, since you don’t know what technology will be available ten years from now, and may already be looking to make a switch. You should still be aware that your sight only has a shelf-life for ten years.

Recently, I got to use the Mepro at our Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous. I was very impressed with how bright it is. Dual illumination makes the reticle highly visible even under bright daylight. If I didn’t already know that it didn’t use batteries, I would not have believed it.
