The Road Not Traveled: Two States with Death Penalty Offer Americans a Choice in 2023


In 2023, as the year draws to a close and we approach its end, the United States remains an outlier in terms of its capital punishment. The situation in the United States is much more complex than this statement suggests.
Death penalty usage continues to decline in the United States. In fewer places are people being put to death, and even in those areas where it is still practiced, there are fewer executions.
But the United States is still far from having abolished the death penalty.
Two states that have the death penalty are moving in radically different directions, and this offers Americans a choice on the future of capital justice. In Ohio, the state where an execution has not been carried out in more than five year, many people now believe that they can do without capital punishment.
Florida is a very different state at the end the year. 2023 has seen an uptick in Florida’s use of the death penalty and a loosening of the standards governing death sentences.
