Knowing Your milkman is a powerful tool
On my writing desk is a copy of Joel Salatin’s book You Can Farm. The beginners’ guide to regenerative farming practices is more of a how-to book than a philosophical one, and is not, perhaps, inspirational the way the words of Horace or Chesterton might be to your average writer. I still keep it in my toolbox with all of the other things that help me to do my job.
These big, green letters are a constant reminder of what it’s like to be American. This phrase has meaning only if it can be attributed to the kind of people who risked their lives and livelihoods to grow wheat and corn, and who fought in wars to continue doing so, in peace, far from government critics. These men and woman did not come into America as the expert farmers we may imagine. The green letters represent a prescription and an ethos. It is important to understand that you can use your own language.….
