Volvo Penta IPS has revolutionized boating over the past few years. The pods’ efficiency and maneuverability – especially when coupled with a Joystick – has allowed boaters to move up to larger vessels. It’s been a true game changer.
It’s important to remember that IPS was not universally accepted out of the gate. In fact, Inboard Propulsion System (IPS) was widely sceptical. The pods would be difficult to maintain or repair. Can forward-facing props work? What would happen if the prop was sheared and you ran aground?
The industry, in short, held its breath thinking Volvo Penta, was, well… crazy. As IPS began to make docking heroes out of everyone in the following years, the system took flight.

I visited the test center at Krossholmen in Sweden, near Gothenburg. This is where Volvo Penta has been testing systems for over 60 years.
