As millions turn to censorship for political reasons, free speech is falling. Some are now running for federal office with the promise of silencing others. The emergence of an unholy alliance between government, academia, and media companies is one of the most alarming features of this time. Together, they’ve established the most comprehensive censorship regime in the country’s history.
House committees are forcing the system to the public. This week, the House Judiciary Committee issued a staff report of 103 pages on the academic aspect of the triumvirate. The most alarming thing about this report, however, is the fact that it adds a new layer of speech-control measures supported by government. It also reflects the conscious and coordinated attempt to censor through allies within a maze of academic and public-interest groups.
I was called to testify at the hearings of the Special Committee investigating the system of censorship earlier this year. I warned that there was ample evidence of a system based on “censorship by surrogate” where government agencies used academic and media allies to silence those with opposing views.
