This is the first in a series of five publications focused on COVID-19’s impact on maternal and child health (MCH) programs and populations in the U.S. Each publication focuses on a facet of MCH, including COVID-19 response and recovery, health and human services workforce, childcare, behavioral health, and community supports. This series is based on interviews and research that were conducted between January 2024 and early 2022, including a roundtable of experts held in summer 2022.

The United States have higher rates of maternal mortality than similar countries that are economically developed. Maternal mortality, and deaths related to pregnancy are indicators of population health as well as the quality of healthcare. When mothers and fathers are absent, communities and families suffer both economically and psychologically.
