Producers feared the Bordeaux 2022 vintage would be a dud. It’s Exceptional.

Many Bordeaux producers were shocked when they saw the quality of the vintage 2022. Two months of 100°F record temperatures and no rain had zapped their hopes, but the resulting bottles were decidedly not what they’d expected.

Although the drought and heat were supposed to have cooked the grapes and made them bitter, the producers were stunned by the apparent balance and the great vintage. The Bordeaux reds of 2022 are dense and powerful, with an alcohol content between 14% and 15%. These wines are incredibly fresh, and they fit right in with the great Bordeaux tradition.

The producers are pleasantly surprised and scrambling to explain.

Highlights of the Site

“After the weather we had during the summer, I feared we would end up with hot, jammy wines. But that is clearly not the case,” says Thomas Duroux, director of Château Palmer in Margaux.

Bordeaux is not just about Margaux. All the reds are drinkable young, and have a potential for aging. The only disappointments were the sweet whites and whites that lacked acidity and freshness.
