As the new year rings in resolutions, you may be brave enough to take on one of the trendiest challenges of 2024: Dry January—31 days without alcohol. Whether you’re looking to boost your health, calm your mind, or just slow down, we have the mocktail recipes to get you through the month. 

Alcohol Change UK officially started the Dry January campaign in 2013, and it’s become more popular each year. In 2023, 15% of U.S. adults—260 million Americans—pledged to participate in the sober month. Alcohol consumption is on the rise, and this coincides with a desire to reset both physically and mentally. The U.S. alcohol consumption has steadily increased since the 1990s. Pew Research estimates in 2021 that the average American aged over 21 will consume 603 standard drinks. The per capita consumption in the West is even higher.

That’s not to say we should all go cold turkey, but Dry January can be a refreshing break, especially after the booze-heavy holidays. There are also the obvious health benefits. Researchers have found that even a short break can result in weight loss, better sleeping, an improved mood and more energy.
