We pay tribute to those stars who have died in the past year, who were either born in New Jersey or who made New Jersey their home, or who represented New Jersey in another memorable way. These celebrities’ legacies live on through their works and in our memory.

The star of TV shows including “Homicide: Life on the Street” and, more recently, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was born in Chicago but lived in South Orange for more than two decades with his wife, the actress Ami Brabson. The Essex County town where they raised their three boys, Michael, Isaiah, John Wesley, was the place that the couple called home. “After living in Harlem and Park Slope and Baltimore, we realized we liked this whole backyard thing,” he told New Jersey Monthly 2019 He also said the Garden State “can be shockingly beautiful.” A graduate of Juilliard, Braugher died of lung cancer. He was 61.
