My True Feelings on Pantone’s Color of the Year After Staying in a Room Drenched in It

Domino reported dutifully in December that Pantone’s color experts named Peach Fuzz as their color of the year for 2024. It is a warm and optimistic tone, which feels like a first bite of summer fruit.

The announcement of color of the year, or COTY in editor’s speak, is a funny thing. Nowadays, nearly every paint brand, including Benjamin Moore and Behr, chooses one. Backdrop, a cool-kid paint company, teamed up with Coming Soon to produce a macaroni & cheese color that was named Color Of The Year in 2022. The description? “Yellow-orange rubber band.” As editors, we cover most of these announcements—but where does one draw the line between clever marketing and real-life application? It’s not as if we all repaint our walls every year to simply follow a trend.

But Pantone’s selection also came with a promise: “Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz captures our desire to nurture ourselves and others,” reads the company’s website. Nurture, ah. Just saying the word…
