Author Rhonda Stoppe thought she was prepared to be a great mom … until she gave birth to her second child, a son. Rhonda was not ready to be his mom. Raising your daughter was simple. Raising a boy felt intimidating.
Many mothers can relate. They can relate to their daughters’ thoughts, feelings, and worldview. Their sons are not the same. Jean, my wife, was able to adapt to our two sons and create a meaningful relationship with both. But she had to work hard. She understands how difficult it can be to connect with boys that think and behave differently than her.
With God’s leading, Rhonda began meeting several older and wiser women who fulfilled Paul’s exhortation in Titus 2:3-4: “Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children.”
These women gave Rhonda advice on parenting and encouragement. They also engaged her in Bible studies through which to filter her experiences. Over time, Rhonda learned that success as a mom doesn’t depend on what her son did, but on her obedience to God.
If you’re a mom, it is possible that you have dreams…
