First Spouses Meet to Promote Overdose Prevention Initiatives


At NGA’s 2024 Winter Meeting, the nation’s First Spouses joined together in a session to raise awareness about overdose prevention initiatives and to receive training on how to use naloxone, with the participating First Spouses leaving the meeting with the overdose reversal medication in-hand.

Utah First Lady Abby Cox The session was hosted by NGA Program Director Marianne Gibson, who moderated the discussion on state and federal initiatives aimed at increasing fentanyl knowledge and improving behavioral health.

First Spouses were treated to an address by Ms. Delaine Makich, who is a Virginia resident and lost her son Greyson, in 2020, due to fentanyl-induced poisoning. He was a senior at the University of Virginia. Ms. Mazich pointed out the public’s lack of awareness about fentanyl at the time of her son’s death. The number of overdose deaths among teens aged 10-19 increased by 109% between 2019-2021. Many are attributed to the availability of counterfeit pills, which look like prescription drugs but contain fentanyl. This increase in overdoses is not coincidental with the worsening of mental health among youth during the COVID-19…
