This year, October marks the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974. Disability employment has many advantages, both to individuals and our communities. Employment can increase financial independence, provide social interaction, growth and opportunities, and give access to insurance and other benefits. Disability employment can increase economic productivity for communities and create a diverse, inclusive workforce.
In 2013, the then-Delaware Governor Jack Markell served as Chair of National Governors Association. As his Chair’s Initiative, the Governor focused on advancing employment opportunities for individuals with significant disabilities by:
- Employers in both the public and private sectors should be educated about the benefits and challenges of accommodating employees with disabilities.
- Supporting state governments to work with business partners in developing blueprints for the recruitment and retention of people with disabilities as integrated employees in the public sector and private sector.
