Chad’s long-awaited election of a president will end years military rule

In the long-delayed presidential election, which is scheduled to end three years under military rule by interim president Mahamat deby Itno, Chadian voters headed to polling stations on Monday.

Deby Itno became the leader of the country after his father was killed in 2021 by rebels. Last year, when the government announced that it would extend the 18-month process for another two years, there were protests all over the country.

Ten candidates are on the ballot including a female. A country with a population of over 17 million, and among the poorest countries in the globe, has around 8 million registered voters. Analysts predict that Deby Itno will win. A leading opposition figure Yaya Dillo, the current president’s cousin, was killed in February in circumstances that remain unclear.
