Stuart, Florida is known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World.” It is aptly named due to its proximity to the Gulf Stream. Sailfish are constantly flowing through this area. Geoffrey Smith, an artist from the marine industry, made a 18-foot-tall sailfish sculpture to honor the town’s love for the fish. It sits atop the fountain in the middle of town. The Stuart Sailfish Smith’s most famous work of art, the “Icon”, has become a sort of icon for locals and visitors alike. Smith says, “It was a way to give back to Stuart and the community that has been so good to me. Smith was raised in California and attended college in Montana before moving to Florida. 

Smith was drawn to the outdoors from an early age. Smith carved duck decoys as a child, but the path he took to become a full-time painter is unique.
